I made this for lunch yesterday and man was it good.It sounds very plain and a odd combination of ingredients but it works really well.
Goanese Paste:
2 onions
15ml oil
10ml poppy seeds
50mm piece cinnamon
6 cloves
8 black peppercorns
10ml coriander seeds
5ml chilli
3/8th cup dessicated coconut
8 cloves garlic
Roast the onions in the oil, adding water as neccessary to stop it sticking, for about 5 minutes.
Add the spices and garlic – sautee 2 minutes
Add the coconut, sautee for another minute
Blend until smooth with 125ml water.
Reserve
Goanese Potato Gravy
1 large tomato, roughly chopped
4 cups potatoes, quartered and parboiled (I suppose baby potatoes can also be used)
30ml oil
1 x goanese paste.
Mix the tomatoes and 500ml water in a pan, simmer until the tomatoes are soft.
Blitz till smooth and run through a strainer.
Sautee the potatoes in oil until golden.
Add the paste and 250ml water, cover and simmer until potatoes are cooked
Add the tomatoes, season to taste, simmer for 5 minutes
Serve hot.
